Sara Bangert Duncan -

Chi Omega

As a student at The University of Tulsa, Sara Bangert Duncan began a tradition of service to her Chi Omega sorority, university and community. Sara was secretary for the chapter, editor of the Kendallabrum yearbook and Mortar Board president. She graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1956.

Sara is married to Maurice Duncan, a certified public accountant. They have three children, Nancy living in Santa Fe, N.M. and Guerry and Barbara who reside in Houston. They have four grandchildren – all boys! Sara was active as a Parent Teacher Association board member for her children’s schools –

Salk, Byrd and Memorial. As a registered Girl Scout for 15 years, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. While her children attended Oklahoma State University, Sara was president of the Mom’s Clubs for Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta and Delta Tau Delta. Sara and Maurice are members of the Boston Avenue Methodist Church and the Golden Hurricane Club supporting TU athletics.

After graduation, Sara became scholarship advisor to the TU Chi Omega chapter. She became active in the Tulsa Chi Omega Alumnae Association and was publicity and newsletter chairwoman; secretary; programs vice president; vice president and president. In 1989, Sara was honored with the Outstanding Alumnae Award. Sara served as the Chi Omega alumnae recruitment information chairwoman and is now the state recruitment information chairwoman. Sara was the Tulsa Area Alumnae Panhellenic delegate. In that role, she was profiles, newsletter and hospitality chairwoman; scholarships, ways and means and procedures director; secretary; treasurer and vice president. She became TAAP president in 2000.

Sara is currently active in the Assistance League, a national philanthropic organization with 112 chapters. Operation School Bell is the group’s signature philanthropy, providing clothing to needy school children. The Assistance League of Tulsa will serve more than 3,000 school children this year through Operation School Bell by furnishing uniforms and three complete outfits to about 1,800 children. Bargains ALOT Thrift Shop sales support the philanthropic efforts of the organization in our community. Sara’s involvement with the Assistance League began in 1980 and she has served as provisional training chairwoman; secretary; membership and public relations vice president; antiques seminar fundraiser chairwoman; Operation School Bell chairwoman (twice); endowment committee chairwoman; president-elect and president.

In 2002, Sara received the Chi Omega National Lifetime Service Award for her dedication and loyalty to her sorority, community and family. Sara is known for her passion, generosity and kindness. The Tulsa Alumnae Association of Chi Omega is proud to honor Sara Bangert Duncan as its 2008 Woman of the Year!
